Stacey Sell, associate curator of old master drawings, and Kimberly Schenck, head of paper conservation and senior conservator, as they discuss the National Gallery’s collection of Joris Hoefnagel miniatures. Stacey will give a general introduction to the artist and his meticulous renderings of animals, from armadillos to caterpillars, all made during the dawn of natural history. Kimberly will focus on new discoveries in the artist’s depictions of insects, including the use of silver and gold and the earliest known instance of a special printmaking technique using real butterfly wings.
